Application of antistatic agents

Although static electricity is invisible and intangible, it can cause big trouble in industrial production and daily life. As a key functional additive to eliminate or inhibit the accumulation of static electricity, antistatic agents ensure that many industrial production processes can be carried out safely and efficiently, and protect products from damage.

The core chemical principle of antistatic agents is to use the "double-sidedness" of its molecules to build a conductive channel on the surface of the material to conduct electrostatic charges away. Antistatic agent molecules include hydrophilic groups and hydrophobic groups. The hydrophilic group likes water, is polar, and can combine with water molecules; the hydrophobic group does not like water, but likes to stay with non-polar polymer materials such as plastics and rubber.

When antistatic agents are added to materials such as plastics, these antistatic agent molecules automatically adjust their position:

On the surface of the material, the hydrophobic groups of the antistatic agent molecules will penetrate into the plastic, while the hydrophilic groups will face outward and extend into the air. This forms a tightly packed molecular film. The outward-facing hydrophilic groups adsorb water molecules in the air and form a very thin water film on the surface of the material. This water film is the key. Although water molecules are not strong electrolytes, they will weakly ionize into hydrogen ions (H⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). At the same time, the antistatic agent molecules themselves may also ionize in the water. The presence of these ions makes the originally insulating plastic surface conductive. Once the material generates static electricity due to friction, this conductive water film can quickly conduct the excess static charge to the environment, thereby preventing the accumulation of static electricity.

This is the main working principle of internally added antistatic agents. For the external application type, the process is similar, except that we directly brush the film of antistatic agent molecules onto the surface of the object.

There are many types of antistatic agents, and they can be classified in many ways according to different classification standards. According to the chemical structure and molecular charging, it can also be divided into anionic, cationic, zwitterionic and non-ionic. Their application methods are very flexible, whether they are internal addition or external coating, and can adapt to different production processes. Moreover, they have less impact on the properties of the material itself, such as transparency and mechanical strength, and can better maintain the original quality of the product.
